Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar informed Parliament about the deteriorating situation in Bangladesh. Addressing the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (August 6), he stated that India is closely monitoring the developments. Tensions have been high in Bangladesh since the elections in January 2024, leading to student protests starting in June.

He mentioned that government buildings and infrastructure have been attacked, with violence persisting throughout July. He urged for a peaceful resolution and expressed concern over attacks on minority-owned shops and temples. Comprehensive information is still pending.

August 4 Saw the Worst Deterioration

Jaishankar stated, "Bangladesh is very close to us. Tension has been there since January, with violence in June and July. We were in touch with political parties there. After the Supreme Court's order, the situation changed, and Hasina had to resign. The worst deterioration was on August 4. Attacks on minorities are particularly worrying. For the moment, Sheikh Hasina is in India. We are in contact with the Indian community, and many students have returned. Our embassy is active, and we hope the local government ensures the safety of our citizens. The attacks on minorities are concerning, and we are in contact with Bangladesh.

What the Foreign Minister Said in the All-Party Meeting

Additionally, Jaishankar briefed leaders of all parties about the situation in the violence-affected country and the Indian government's steps to handle the potential security, economic, and diplomatic consequences. Sources indicate that the foreign minister discussed the strategy to limit conflict with the new government in Bangladesh while supporting the ousted leader.

Jaishankar reportedly told the MPs, "This is an ongoing situation. The government will take appropriate action at the right time." He emphasized that they want to give Sheikh Hasina time to inform the center about her future actions. She is currently in Delhi.
