While no official confirmation of such cases has been made, various media reports suggest that Bihar has registered about four cases of white fungus, which health experts say is more dangerous than Mucormycosis. Mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, is on the rise in India. After coronavirus disease (Covid-19), India's main healthcare problem right now is a fungal infection. The federal government urged states and union territories (UTs) on Thursday to make black fungus a notifiable disease under the 1897 Epidemic Diseases Act.
However, a new threat has emerged in the form of a white fungus that has medical experts concerned. While no official confirmation of such cases has been made, various media reports suggest that Bihar has registered about four cases of white fungus, which health experts say is more dangerous than Mucormycosis. Dr. Balram Bhargava, director general of the Indian Council of Medical Research, said on Thursday that the color of the fungus is determined by its growth. Dr. Bhargava said that fungus infections are normal when there is dampness, but he didn't mention white fungus explicitly.
According to records, the white fungus is considered to be more harmful than the black fungus because it can affect other parts of the body besides the lungs, including the skin, stomach, kidney, brain, private parts, and mouth. While there has been little evidence of the white fungus spreading to other nations, experts believe it may be as dangerous as the virus, according to reports. The mortality rate of white fungus is uncertain at this time. Patients with white fungus infection, on the other hand, exhibited Covid-like symptoms but tested negative.
Medical experts agree that, as reported in the studies, an HRCT scan might be needed to trace the fungal infection. In patients with serious Covid-19, an HRCT scan is used as a secondary diagnosis. People with poor immunity, pre-existing medical conditions, asthma, and people on or using steroids, much like Covid-19 and black fungus, are at a high risk of contracting the infection, according to the study.
